The Theatres Trust's Conference 11 looks at how buildings and found spaces are converted into theatres exploring the visions and realities behind venues including the Tobacco Factory in Bristol, Arcola, BAC and the Park Theatre in London, and the Arches in Glasgow. We'll be looking at what converted spaces offer artists and audiences, the practicalities of developing spaces not originally designed to be theatres, what makes them unique, and how redevelopment can be managed when money is tight. Questions will include: Is it really less expensive to convert an existing space into a theatre? Will public spending cuts drive more organisations to convert buildings into theatres? Are artists able to achieve more from converted spaces than purpose-built theatres? Do conversions have an artistic shelf life, and what happens when they no longer meet the needs of their users what should be protected? Conference 11 is the first significant look at the design, construction and capital development of theatre conversions. It will cover short life and long term conversions, and building types including town halls, warehouses, factories, pubs, vaults and railway arches, miners institutes, meeting halls, churches, offices and other spaces, including former and derelict theatres. Federation of Scottish Theatre: Emporium 2011
Friday 25th February 2011, Pitlochry Festival Theatre
If you have a production to sell and want to meet venues and promoters from Scotland and across the UK, or if you are keen to make contact with Scottish companies to book work for your programme, then this networking day is the place for you!
This year, Emporium takes place at Pitlochry Festival Theatre. It is a marketplace for theatre makers and a boutique for bookers, and will take the same format as our previous successful Emporium events. More of the popular face-to-face meetings and the chance for you to give everyone a quick update on projects and plans in our Open Exchange Session.
Taking digital technology in the performing arts as a theme, keynote speakers will include Hannah Rudman, Director of AmbITion and Managing Director of Rudman Consulting. Hannah will provide an overview of the digital landscape in Scotland (and beyond) and highlight initiatives for the coming year. Further speakers will be announced shortly. There will also be plenty of opportunities for networking, both over lunch and by ending the day with a glass of wine and a final chance to chat.
New for this year, as well as taking home a delegate pack, you will also be registered on the FST/Creative Scotland Scottish Arts Touring Website, which will be launched at Emporium. This will include more detailed information on each venue and company which you can access both before and after the event.

Creative practice for a sustainable future - What might the future look like if artists could change the world?
Creative Conference at Taliesin Arts Centre, Swansea, January 29th
Calling all artists, performers, photographers, sculptors, writers, directors, producers, venue stage and production managers, strategists, funders, visionaries and everyone else in the arts!.
Emergence is a series of creative conferences for people working in the arts in Wales. An opportunity to network, share ideas and get tools for a more sustainable practice; to celebrate the anarchic and unpredictable spirit of art and learn practical ways in which artists can make a difference in these times of ecological, economic and social instability.
Emergence will create a focus and momentum within the arts in Wales, with the intention of making the vision of a One Planet Wales real, relevant, attractive and achievable. We will focus on two main themes: developing a low-carbon arts infrastructure, including the management and development of venues, and developing the role of the arts as a crucible of ideas and visions for a low-carbon One Planet Wales.
Guest Speaker: Satish Kumar - founder and Director of Programmes of the Schumacher College international centre for ecological studies. The day will also include presentations by Judith Knight (Arts Admin), Tom Andrews (People United), Axel Tangerding (Meta Theater, Munich) and Lucy Neal OBE (Transition Town Tooting). Plus guest artist and opportunities to meet and share ideas and experience.

Arts Council of Wales looks at ahead to the Councils’ Annual Conference and the next stage in its Investment Review
11 November 2010
With more people than ever taking part, or attending the arts, and a strong belief that the arts are at the cutting edge of any society of ambition, where better place to be to hear what the future holds for the arts in Wales than at the Council’s Annual Conference.
Held at the Riverfront Arts Centre on Wednesday, 17 November, the Conference will be a hub of activity with discussions on a new dance initiative, a new national touring scheme and a new theatre production development fund to name only a few. Professor Ian Hargreaves will deliver a keynote on The Creative Industries, and Sinfonia Cymru as well as Rhodri Miles will perform.
On top of a packed programme, the Conference is very timely in falling on the same day that the Welsh Assembly Government will give its first indications of the budget position for next year.
Minister for Heritage, Alun Ffred Jones said:.
“As we face the biggest financial challenge since devolution, we need to make the best use we can of available resources. I am certainly keen to ensure that the arts maintain their position at the heart of Welsh cultural life. I look forward to speaking at the Conference and sharing views on how we present a modern, confident and diverse image of Wales to audiences across the nation.”
The decisions announced back in June in the Council’s Strategic Investment Review marked a sea change in the provision of the arts in Wales from the public purse. Wales needs arts of quality and excellence to engage with the widest possible audience, and the Strategy leads with front-line delivery of the arts to Welsh people..
Nick Capaldi, Chief Executive, Arts Council of Wales said:
“It’s more important than ever before that we continue to promote – with courage, imagination and optimism those things that sustain and enrich civic life. And we are as optimistic as we can be that the inherent of the power of the arts is the greatest weapon we have to fight back.”
It’s hoped that the conference will explore how arts organisations can help turn a period of adversity to the advantage of the arts. The conference will be a place for debate, new thinking and the exchange of ideas.

11 Tachwedd 20100
Mae mwy o bobl nac erioed yn cymryd rhan yn y celfyddydau neu'n mynd iddynt ac mae cred gref bod y celfyddydau ym mlaen y gad i unrhyw gymdeithas uchelgeisiol. Ble gwell i fod, felly, na chynhadledd flynyddol y Cyngor i glywed beth ddeil y dyfodol i gelfyddydau Cymru?
Cynhelir y gynhadledd yng Nghanolfan celfyddydau Glan yr afon ar 17 Tachwedd. Bydd yn fwrlwm o weithgarwch gyda thrafodaethau ar fenter newydd ym myd y ddawns, cynllun teithio'n genedlaethol newydd a chronfa datblygu cynhyrchu theatr i enwi ond ychydig. Bydd araith gan y siaradwr gwadd, yr Athro Ian Hargreaves, ar y diwydiannau creadigol a pherfformia Sinfonia Cymru a Rhodri Miles.
Bydd y gynhadledd lawn a bywiog yn amserol hefyd - mae'n digwydd ar yr un diwrnod y rhydd y Cynulliad ei arwyddion cyntaf o ran cyllideb y flwyddyn nesaf.
Meddai'r Gweinidog dros Dreftadaeth, Alun Ffred Jones:
“Wynebwn yr her ariannol fwyaf ers datganoli ac mae angen gwneud y gorau o'r adnoddau sydd ar gael. Mi ydw i'n awyddus iawn i sicrhau bod y celfyddydau'n cadw eu lle wrth galon diwylliant Cymru. Mi ydw i'n edrych ymlaen at annerch y gynhadledd a rhannu awgrymiadau am sut mae mynd ati i gyflwyno delwedd o Gymru sy'n fodern, yn hyderus ac yn llawn amrywiaeth i gynulleidfaoedd ledled Cymru."
Nododd penderfyniadau adolygiad buddsoddi strategol y Cyngor a gyhoeddwyd ym Mehefin newid mawr o ran ariannu celfyddydau Cymru o'r pwrs cyhoeddus. Mae ar Gymru angen celfyddydau o safon a rhagoriaeth i ymgysylltu â'r gynulleidfa ehangaf bosibl a darpara'r strategaeth arweiniad wrth gyflwyno'n ymarferol y celfyddydau i bobl Cymru.
Dywedodd Nick Capaldi, Prif Weithredwr y Cyngor:
“Mae'n bwysicach nac erioed o'r blaen i hybu gyda dewrder, dychymyg a gobaith y pethau hynny sy'n cynnal a chyfoethogi bywyd Cymru. Ac rydym yn gadarn yn ein cred mai grym cynhenid y celfyddydau yw'r arf mwyaf sydd gennym yn y frwydr.”
Yn y gynhadledd gobeithiwn archwilio sut y gall sefydliadau celfyddydol fod o gymorth wrth droi cyfnod o gyni er budd i'r celfyddydau. Bydd yn lle i drafod, meddwl a chyfnewid syniadau.
Am ragor o wybodaeth cysylltwch â Siân James, Swyddog y Wasg a'r Cyfryngau, ar 029 2044 1344 neu 07812 801356 neu e-bostiwch sian.james@celfcymru.org.uk
Arts Marketing Symposium 2010
October 2010
How do you create a buzz and get people talking about your activities? How can arts marketing practices become more sustainable? These are just two of the topics under the microscope at Arts Council of Wales' annual Arts Marketing Symposium.
Held at Theatr Brycheiniog on Thursday 21 October, here's your opportunity to share best practice, network and catch up with the latest developments in marketing. There will be something for everyone at all levels, whether you're from a small or large organisation, a producer or presenter of the arts.
This year's top attractions include:
Molly Flatt, Word of Mouth (WOM) Evangelist, 1000 Heads will present a keynote on how organisations can get people talking, how to stimulate WOM and turn these conversations into tangible results.
Drawing on examples from the Design Council, IKEA, Innocent drinks and Unilever, John Grant, author of The Green Marketing Manifesto which recently won Best Environmental Book of the Year, will explore how we can change our marketing practices for the good of the planet.
Megan Price, Marketing Officer, Chapter and Matthew Lawson, Communications Director, National Theatre Wales will be on hand to tell you everything you need to know about social media in 60 minutes.
Nick Millington, Chief Executive, The Rural Media Company will be exploring creative ways of using media to voice issues, ideas and experiences.

Ann Kellaway, Senior Research and Audience Development Officer, Arts Council of Wales will use this session to look at the latest Arts in Wales Survey that will be launched at the Symposium.
Nick Capaldi, Chief Executive, Arts Council of Wales said:
"Year on year, the popularity of Arts Council of Wales' Marketing Symposium has grown and developed because people find it useful, relevant and inspiring to meet other professionals in the field and to come together to share ideas and importantly solutions to the challenges faced every day. The Arts industry is a central part of the Welsh economy, and so it is vitally important that we in the Arts Council continue to support marketing skills, knowledge and networks development within the industry."

Hydref 2010
Sut mae creu cyffro a chael pobl i drafod eich gweithgareddau? Sut gall marchnata'r celfyddydau fynd yn fwy cynaliadwy? Dyma ddau bwnc ymhlith nifer a gaiff sylw manwl yn Symposiwm blynyddol Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru.
Cynhelir y Symposiwm yn Theatr Brycheiniog ddydd Iau 21 Hydref a dyma'ch cyfle i rannu arfer gorau, rhwydweithio a chlywed am y datblygiadau diweddaraf yn y maes. Os ydych yn cyflwyno neu gynhyrchu, mewn sefydliad bach neu fawr, mae rhywbeth at dant pawb.
Ymhlith yr uchafbwyntiau bydd:
Araith gan Molly Flatt (Efengyles ar lafar gwlad, Milpen) am sut y gallwn gael pobl i siarad a'u sbarduno i droi sgyrsiau'n ganlyniadau ymarferol.
Gan dynnu ar esiamplau o'r Cyngor Dylunio, IKEA, innocent drinks ac Unilever, archwilia John Grant, awdur y Green Marketing Manifesto a enillodd lyfr amgylcheddol gorau'r flwyddyn, sut i newid ein marchnata er budd y blaned.
Megan Price, Swyddog Marchnata, Chapter a Matthew Lawson, Cyfarwyddwr Cyfathrebu, National Theatre Wales yno i esbonio cyfryngau cymdeithasol mewn awr.
Archwilia Nick Millington, Prif Weithredwr y Cwmni cyfryngau gwledig, ffyrdd creadigol o ddefnyddio'r cyfryngau i leisio barn a disgrifio profiadau.
Beth a wyddom am gynulleidfaoedd ac ymgyfranogwyr yng nghelfyddydau Cymru heddiw a sut mae pethau wedi eu newid dros y pum mlynedd diwethaf? Yn y sesiwn edrycha Ann Kellaway, Uwch Swyddog Ymchwil a Datblygu Cynulleidfa, Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, ar arolwg diweddaraf celfyddydau Cymru a lansir yn y Symposiwm.
Meddai Nick Capaldi, Prif Weithredwr, Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru:

Starcatchers - Family Friendly work in Scotland
An inspirational organisation based in Edinburgh is aiming to establish Scotland as a world leader in performance arts for babies and toddlers. Starcatchers is 'an innovative project which works in partnership with artists, arts venues, child-care settings and families to develop exciting, inspiring arts experiences for children aged 0-4 in Scotland'. Long-term Residencies build up to the creation of new work, supported with academic research, evaluation, training and audience development initiatives. Although they only operate in Scotland, the kind of work Starcatchers undertakes is of relevance to those theatres and arts centres in Wales interested in family friendly work. Further details can be found at www.starcatchers.org.uk.
