In 2000 the Arts Centre completed a major £4.3 million redevelopment. In 2009 an additional £1.75 million Creative Units development was completed for artists and creative industries, designed by Heatherwick Studio, which is also the base for a major artists inresidence programme. Additional dance studios were also completed in 2009. Combined, this gives Aberystwyth Arts Centre a range of facilities unrivalled throughout much of the UK. The Arts Centre is a department of Aberystwyth University, and sits at the heart of the university's campus, with stunning views over the town of Aberystwyth and along the coastline of Cardigan Bay. The programme is booked at least 6 months in advance, but the longer notice that can be given the better. Many key projects are booked years in advance. |
Performance Spaces
Theatre: The Arts Centre's theatre was built in 1972. It seats audiences of 312 in its normal setting, but can be slightly reduced or extended depending on events. It has the full lighting and sound facilities of a busy centre. The theatre is the Arts Centre's main venue for touring companies of national and international reputation, which in recent years have included Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, National Theatre, Propellor and Northern Stage Theatre Company. It is also a major centre for Welsh language drama, including productions from Theatr Genedlaethol Cymru, Llwyfan Gogledd Cymru, Theatr Bara Caws and Aberystwyth based Arad Goch. Other events in the theatre include dance from companies including Diversions Dance Company; opera from companies including Mid Wales Opera; comedy from artists such as Rhod Gilbert, Michael McIntyre and Jeremy Hardy, and many more. The theatre is also used by student and local amateur companies and groups. The Arts Centre produces its own professional summer season show each year, and past productions have included 'Fiddler on the Roof', 'West Side Story', 'My Fair Lady', all directed by Michael Bogdanov, and 'The King & I' and for 2010 ‘Chicago’ directed by Anthony Williams.
Great Hall: The main concert hall at the Arts Centre is called the Great Hall and it seats over 900 people. Built in 1970, it is a very adaptable space which can be used for events as varied as live bands, symphony orchestra concerts, and top stand-up comedy acts, as well as conferences and for the University's examinations and Graduation Ceremonies. The Great Hall's facilities are easily adapted for conferences, lecture and trade fairs.
Studio: The Arts Centre's Studio Theatre provides a smaller, more intimate environment for smaller prodcutions and emerging young theatre companies. It is also home to the Art Centre's Open Platform programme, which enables up and coming artists with a platform and support to showcase their work. It is also an ideal venue for meetings and conferences. The studio can accommodate 80 if seating is end on, or between 60 and 80 people in the round.
The Arts Centre has also used its foyer spaces and other public areas in the venue for live performances, and welcomes suggestions from companies who wish to look at less traditional locations for performances!
The main exhibition spaces are Gallery 1, which showcases a high quality programme of contemporary art across the year, and Gallery 2, which focuses on print/photography work. The Ceramics Gallery houses both changing exhibitions and examples from the University's extensive ceramic archive, whilst the Café Gallery showcases work from local artists, or work created on the venue'smain visual arts courses.
A new series of creative units at the Arts Centre, designed by leading architect, Thomas Heatherwick were officially opened in May 2009. The units are home to a visual artists, new media companies, publishers, and also Creu Cymru itself!
Workshop space includes specialist dance studios, Digilab, performance and rehearsal rooms, pottery and 3D room, and these spaces are heavily used, mainly for the Arts Centre's extensive community arts programme which includes work with schools, emerging artists, professional artists, and general access, with evening classes in many art forms, dance school, stage school and youth theatre.
The cinema programme ranges from art house to main stream, and features a number of festivals throughout the year, including WOW: Wales One World Film Festival, and Abertoir, Aberystwyth's very own horror festival! The cinema screens at least two films each day, and more over the weekends, and is also used for meetings and conferences, or hired out for DVD parties. Recent digital upgrades now make High Definition and 3D films a very popular choice with audiences, whilst our ‘live streamings’ of performances from the National Theatre, New York Met and Royal Opera House have been a wonderful addition to our programme.
The Arts Centre is home to two award winning cafes which provide a range of hot food, snacks, cakes, and teas and coffees. Vegetarian options are always available, and the menus are prepared freshly each day. Also within the venue (and run in-house) are a Craft & Design Shop which features regular ceramics and jewellery exhibitions, and a Bookshop offering an extensive range of books across all interests. The Arts Centre's bar is also open daily, and stocks a wide ranges of beverages, from coffees to champagne!

The History of the Metropole – The Met, originally known as the Metropole Theatre and Dance Hall, has had a significant role in the History of Abertillery, since it’s construction in 1892, and has always been recognised as a hub in the cultural life of the community. In the 1920’s Abertillery was the second largest town in the county of Monmouthshire, second only to Newport .At this time it’s population was an incredible 40,000, due to the expansion of the coal mining industry in the area. This growth meant that many new houses were built and most importantly a new Theatre and Dance Hall – The Metropole. |
![]() |
In it’s hey day The Met’ (as it is known locally) had a fantastic ballroom and dance floor, a Victorian Theatre, where many famous names performed – Charlie Chaplin amongst them, and in later years an indoor market and cinema.
Over the years the coal mining industry effectively disappeared and the town’s prosperity declined. In the late 1990’s the Met fell into disrepair and the building (apart from the ground floor which houses the Abertillery and District Museum) had to close due to structural problems.
![]() |
The regeneration of Abertillery is high on the agenda for Blaenau Gwent County Borough Council, and thanks to tireless efforts of local Councillors, local Societies and Organisations and Officers of the Council, the Met was successful in obtaining funding from a number of sources – The Welsh Assembly Government, Heads of the Valley Fund and the Wales Arts Council being the main bodies, which meant that the building could be completely refurbished as it is today.
The Met is once more recognised as the centre for Cultural events, activities and performances in Abertillery, as well as operating as a successful Conference and Meeting venue. Along with the professional artists, local societies and businesses which utilise the excellent facilities, the building is a base for FFIN Dance as the Dance Company in Residence, and has forged links with cultural organisations in Europe, who visit and perform regularly at the venue.
Recognition of the building’s superb facilities and place in the Community, was made when the Business was the proud recipient of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors “Building Which Most Benefits A Community “ all Wales award in 2008. |

| Milford Haven’s Torch Theatre celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2007 with an ambitious refurbishment project which has transformed it into one of the most comfortable venues in the British Isles. A modern and vibrant centre for the arts, it prides itself on extending a warm Pembrokeshire welcome to all visitors. |
![]() |
The Torch is an award winning producing theatre company with an impressive repertoire, and the striking new theatre was re-launched in the spring of 2008 with a highly acclaimed version of the award-winning musical The Hired Man. The multi-million pound makeover has also created a new Studio Theatre which now allows the Torch to offer a choice of films and live performances between the two spaces every night of the week.
The Torch exists to produce quality theatre for Milford Haven and the County of Pembrokeshire, providing a mix of diverse, challenging and stimulating live theatre events to stimulate its audience and deepen engagement with the performing arts.
The Theatre's Main House has a seating capacity of 297, with 4 wheelchair spaces and 2 further wheelchair spaces in a private box. There is also an Infra red hearing assist system and an audio description facility.
The Studio Theatre has a comfortable and intimate environment, with 102 retractable seats. It is fully air conditioned with up to 2 wheelchair spaces, infra red hearing assist system, audio description facility and a fully sprung dance floor and is also fully equipped for live shows and film, with the latest 7.1 Dolby Digital Surround Sound.
Full details of both performance spaces are available as downloads at www.torchtheatre.co.uk.
The Torch Theatre has a regular Cinema programme, screening the latest movie blockbusters alongside art house and off-beat films. There is also a dedicated Gallery where visitors can also take pleasure in viewing paintings, photographs, ceramics, crafts and installations by local and national artists in the Joanna Field Gallery. The programme changes regularly, and entry is free.
Café Torch is the perfect place to enjoy a light lunch or a coffee in a relaxed and friendly setting. Adjacent to the Gallery, and opening onto a cliff top terrace with panoramic views over Milford’s marina and docks, the café - which is open daily - also offers pre-show suppers. There is also a large and comfortable Theatre Bar.
In addition to the Torch’s own professional productions, there is a regular and broad programme of first rate touring shows ranging from musical theatre, drama and comedy, dance, opera, lectures and the best in live music. The Studio Theatre may also be used as a meeting place and is a valuable community facility.
The Torch is programmed about 9 months in advance with a year round programme.
