The Riverfront, Newport
The Riverfront opened in October 2004. A £16m new build at the heart of the regeneration of the riverside areas of Newport, it serves the City itself and draws in some audiences from surrounding areas including Cardiff, which is just 15 minutes away. The previous professional theatre in Newport had been knocked down in 1961, but The Riverfront has rapidly re-established a programme and audience for professional performance in the City.
The Riverfront Theatre: Two tiers face a separated proscenium stage with orchestra lift giving forestage and pit options. Overall capacity without orchestra pit or forestage 493 seats, with orchestra pit or forestage 463
The Riverfront Studio Theatre: Retractable raked seating, capacity 128, or flat floor seating 100 cabaret style.
Studio Theatre operates as a cinema Monday – Wednesday every week.

Conference room seats 15. 3 x workshop rooms capacity 8-15. One recording studio and rehearsal room (soundproofed). Dance studio 11m x 11m. 2 gallery spaces.
Mixed artform programme: c. 175 performances per year. 30% pantomime, 25% music, 15% drama, 10% family, 10% comedy, 5% dance, 5% other.
Particular interest in developing audiences for drama, physical theatre and dance, classical music. Within those areas, particular interest in new approaches to classic titles, physical and visual devised work, chamber music and piano.
Brochure deadlines determine cut-off points for programme: May for following Autumn, October for following spring, January for following summer. However, much work programmed ahead of those dates – 9 to 12 months before date of performance.
Programming all year, except July and August. May, June, September quieter than October to April.
